Alberta’s first certified organic orchard and the location of en Sante Winery, owned and operated by Victor and Elizabeth Chrapko, provided the perfect setting for a visit by Vegreville’s Red Hot Red Hats Ladies who enjoyed a tour, pie and coffee. The Red Hot Red Hats Ladies, a social group, held their first meeting in January 2004, registered as a chapter in April 2004 and have 37 members. The Orchard has 15 different fruit and is visited by groups and individuals on a regular basis. Following the closure of their hog operation, the Chrapkos started the orchard which grew from 350 apple trees to over 1,500 with approx. 65 varieties of apples. Although the Chrapko family made their own wine for a number of years, they were the first in the province to apply to make organic wine for sale. All the bottling is done on a trailer on the farm.
Wellknown in organic farming circles, the Chrapkos received the Best Practices Renewal Award from Agriculture Minister George Groeneveld in February 2007. (Photo by Sonny Rajoo)
